Is one of your New Year resolutions to recycle more? Although the year is moving quickly, it’s never too late to take steps to reduce your environmental footprint. As Americans, we produce 4.4 pounds of trash, while only 1.5 pounds of materials are recycled. It’s time to take steps to recycle more and go green.
Whether you’re looking to increase recycling at home or make your business more environmentally friendly, here are some recycling tips to start 2019 off right!
Declutter and Donate
When was the last time you cleaned your closet or looked at the items in your basement storage? Decluttering areas of your home can breathe new life into neglected spaces. Sort through old clothing, toys, electronics, and appliances and consider donating items to your Goodwill or Donation Center before putting them in your trash bin. Not only will you be cleaning up and organizing areas in your home, but you’ll be donating to a great cause and may receive a tax break.
Implement a Recycling Plan at Work and at Home
One way to reduce your environmental footprint is to establish a process for recycling. At home, you can add in recycling bins in the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. Check your household items, including plastic cleaning bottles, shampoo bottles, body lotion, wine, and coffee, to see which items are recyclable. At work, you can also implement strategically placed recycling bins for every day products like paper and plastic. Every product that is reused or tossed into a recycling bin keeps landfills from growing.
Go Above and Beyond
While many consumers know how to recycle cardboard and plastic, they may not realize they can recycle light bulbs, batteries, and electronics. We challenge you to think outside of the (cardboard) box and go above and beyond with your recycling habits. With a little research, you can find ways to recycle TVs, laptops, computers, and cell phones.
Locate Local Recycling Centers in the Atlanta Area
If you’re not sure where your closest recycling center is, take the time to do a little research. There are several recycling facilities in the Atlanta area, so finding a recycling center in your area should be simple. Facility websites should let you know which type of materials they accept.
Reduce your Plastic Consumption
50 million plastic bottles are thrown away each day in the United States. This can majorly impact our environment as plastic cannot be broken down within a landfill. As consumers, it’s our responsibility to find ways to minimize our environmental impact. Look for opportunities every day like bringing a reusable shopping bag, reusing plastic containers for storage, eliminating plastic utensil use for lunch, and finding creative ways to reuse and recycling plastic! Reducing your plastic waste will not only help you go green, but save money, too!
